GI / KIMONO

Jiu Jitsu is traditionally performed in a GI or Kimono made up of pants, jacket and a ranked belt, the ranked belt is to easily identify the level of the student to the instructor and other students. The GI is a integral aspect of training jiu jitsu and is
used like a tool in jiu jitsu helping to develop a wide understanding of concepts, principles and techniques.
Both terms (GI & KIMONO) are Japanese, (adopted by Brazilians) and as such, do have different meanings in their country of origin. Kimono literally translated means “thing to wear”. In Japanese “ki” is “wear”, and “mono” is “thing”. In Japanese culture, that refers to clothes people wear daily, often associated (but not limited to) the robes women wear.

The Gi, on the other hand, is an abbreviated version of either “Keikogi” and/or
“Dogi”. The first means training clothes (Keiko-train, Gi-clothes). “Dogi” on the other hand, is somewhat less used and means a similar thing, but from a more philosophical standpoint, where “Do” means “way”, which is how most eastern martial arts are usually described.
