Part 2 – consists of live timed rounds of sparring or rolling.
Students are welcome to attend part 1, part 2 or both.

We also encourage students running late or have those  that have to leave early from class to please still join in the class as we understand with or busy and modern life styles, work and family also traffic it can be hard to attend on time, every time. so please don’t let this stop you from getting in some training. we understand and would prefer you to be on the mats and training and enjoying jiu jitsu then not.

WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR FIRST CLASS
Below is a list of things students may want to bring to a jiu jitsu class

  • Work out clothes (track pants or shorts with a t-shirt, NOGI and GI uniforms are available at the academy or students are welcome to get uniforms online.

  • Drink bottle, the academy dose sell water but your welcome to bring your own.

  • A set of thongs, so you can early access toilets and off mat areas with out putting your shoes on and off.

  • Mouth guard, many students like to use a mouthguard for safety reasons.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TAPPING OUT IN JIU JITSU
One of the most important lessens you will learn in jiu jitsu is tapping out, the tap symbolises giving up or that your partner has bested you, think of tapping out like a check mate in chess you played your moves as did your partner but you got caught and the game is over. it’s very important that you don’t see tapping out as a weakness or avoid tapping out to show how strong you are or tough you can be, this will only result in injury and keep you off the mat and away from training. at DCJJ we have a saying “Tap early / Train tomorrow”.

The values of tapping

  • Trust, tapping builds trust between all students in the academy sharing a common understanding of acknowledgment the match is finished.

  • Respect, building respect by not putting your partner or your self in a situation that may course injury.

  • Learning, One of the best ways to learn is to put yourself in positions you may not always use or are less formula with this will ultimately lear to being submitted so know this is just part of the game and is 100% normal.

  • Progress, As you understand jiu jitsu more and more you will be able to avoid tapping a bit better, but never fully :) tapping is a great sign that you are progressing in your journey, trying new thing and exploring new positions and pathways.

  • Accountability, ultimately your are accountable and responsible for your actions on the mats.

    • Remember that all the best Jiu Jitsu player, Submission grapples and MMA fighters all around the world all started out at day one and all tapped many many times in there training life, this is 100% normal and without it we could never achieve our goals on the mat.
